IEC vacancies are published only on the Electoral Commission of South Africa's official website, and you apply through its e-Recruitment portal. For each election the IEC hires tens of thousands of temporary staff to run voting stations, alongside a smaller number of permanent posts. Messages offering IEC jobs through WhatsApp, Facebook or short links are scams.

IEC job application 2026: election staff for the local elections
South Africa's local government elections are set for 4 November 2026, after the date was proclaimed in August. For these elections, the IEC recruited election staff with applications closing on 31 August 2026, as reported by South African media. The roles were:
- Presiding Officer: runs the voting station, its staff and the election materials.
- Deputy Presiding Officer: assists the Presiding Officer and can take over supervisory duties.
- Electoral Officer: helps run the station, including queues, the voters' roll, ink, ballots and voting booths.
Reported pay for the duration of the event:
| Role | Reported pay |
|---|---|
| Presiding and Deputy Presiding Officers | R3,580 to R4,500, varying by region and subject to deductions |
| Electoral Officers | R1,320 to R3,000, as an inclusive package |
The IEC put particular weight on supervisory experience for the leadership roles, and Presiding Officers need to know election procedures. Earlier in 2026, the IEC said it would recruit more than 70,000 staff for a voter registration weekend.
How to apply for IEC vacancies
- Create an e-Recruitment profile on the IEC's official site at elections.org.za. Register, accept the terms and enter your details.
- Browse the open vacancies in the IEC's job portal and choose the role that fits your experience.
- Apply before the closing date. Late applications are not accepted for election staff.
- Keep your contact details current, since successful applicants are contacted for training and placement.
How to spot a fake IEC job offer
In July 2026, fact-checkers flagged a WhatsApp and Facebook message offering "2026 recruitment intakes" for more than 25,000 IEC positions through a shortened link. The IEC confirmed it was fraudulent. The Commission says:
- It does not recruit through unofficial websites, WhatsApp numbers or "link in bio" posts.
- All legitimate vacancies are published only on its official website.
- Jobseekers should not share personal information with such posts.
As a rule, be suspicious of any offer that asks for money, promises a job without an application, or pushes you to act within hours.
IEC jobs, elections and prediction markets
Election staff are the people who make the results possible: the counts they sign at each voting station are what the IEC eventually announces. Those official results are also what most election markets use as their resolution source.
