In short: next manager odds price each candidate's chance of landing a football job. They are long, noisy markets: dozens of names, wide margins and prices that jump on every rumour. That makes them hard to beat, but it also creates the occasional mispricing.

Step 1: Measure the margin

Convert each price into a probability (1 ÷ decimal odds) and add them up. In long lists, the total is often far above 100%. That excess is the bookmaker's margin, and it sits mostly on the outsiders. Divide each probability by the total to get a fairer estimate before comparing anything. Our overround guide shows the method.

Step 2: Check what the market actually asks

Read the rules carefully:

  • Does it settle on the next permanent manager, or anyone in charge?
  • How are caretaker spells treated?
  • What happens if the current manager stays past a date?

Two markets with similar titles can settle very differently.

Step 3: Use base rates, not headlines

Before a vacancy exists, prices reflect speculation. Ask:

  • How often do clubs in this situation change manager mid-season?
  • Does the club usually promote internally or hire a big name?
  • Has a sporting director already shaped the shortlist?

Many appointments come from outside the early favourites, which is why long-dated markets carry so much uncertainty.

Step 4: Treat media reports as information, with a delay

Reliable reporters often move prices before official news. Two patterns repeat:

  1. Overreaction: a single report pushes a name too short. See fading overreactions.
  2. Underreaction: consistent reports from several trusted sources are priced in slowly.

The favourite–longshot bias also matters: outsiders tend to be overpriced in markets with many runners.

Step 5: Size small and spread risk

Manager markets are illiquid and can move against you overnight. Keep positions small with a bankroll plan and use fractional Kelly sizing only when you have a clear edge.

Availability and risk

In Great Britain, betting is available through operators licensed by the Gambling Commission. Whatever platform you use, set limits and stop if it stops being fun.

From your country, Polymarket currently only allows closing existing positions. You can follow markets and prices and learn the steps with our guides on signing up and depositing, but you can open new trades only while you are in a supported country. Never hide your location with a VPN: it breaks the terms of use and can get your account blocked. See where Polymarket is available.
