In short: yes, a UK general election can be called early. The Prime Minister can ask the monarch to dissolve Parliament at any time, and an election follows roughly five weeks later. If no one calls it, Parliament dissolves automatically five years after it first met.
The rules since 2022
The Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022 replaced the Fixed-term Parliaments Act. Its key points:
- The Prime Minister decides when to request a dissolution.
- No vote in the House of Commons is needed.
- A Parliament automatically ends five years after its first meeting.
- Polling day falls 25 working days after dissolution.
For the Parliament elected in July 2024, the latest possible election date falls in the summer of 2029.
Can others force an early election?
Opposition parties, petitions and protests can call for an election, but they cannot force one. In practice, an early election happens when:
- the Prime Minister thinks the timing is favourable;
- a government loses its majority and cannot govern;
- a new party leader wants their own mandate.
Local elections are different
Local elections choose councillors and some directly elected mayors, usually on the first Thursday in May. Different councils vote in different years, so each spring's results map covers only part of the country. They do not change the government, but they are widely read as a mid-term verdict.
How prediction markets price an early election
Markets can list questions such as "Will there be a UK general election before a given date?" or "Who will be the next Prime Minister?". A price of 0.20 implies about a 20% chance. These markets react to leadership crises, by-election losses and poll swings. Our guide to political betting odds vs prediction markets shows how to compare bookmaker odds with market prices.
Things to keep in mind:
- Dissolution is the Prime Minister's choice, so markets are really pricing a political decision.
- Long-dated markets tie up money and can be thin.
- Read the exact resolution rules: "election called" and "election held" are different events.
